in anticipation of a summer travel boom, MUJI teams up with airbnb for host essentials kits

airbnb has teamed up with MUJI to create a kit for prospective hosts as well as existing hosts looking to refresh their spaces and add a curated selection of products for guests to enjoy. a first of its kind, the kit features 23 affordable, design-oriented unique essentials that can fit any type of home and that can accommodate up to two guests.

as the world prepares to reactivate the tourism industry, airbnb and MUJI want current hosts and perspective hosts to welcome guests in the best way possible by putting together a selection of items that would make any guest feel at home. the kit covers all the essentials, from kitchenware to porcelain kitchen sets, glass tumblers and serving dishes; to bath and closet products including waffle towels and clothing hangers; to cleaning products, recycled paper notebooks, smooth gel colored pens, and MUJI’s famous aroma diffuser with essential oils.

‘our philosophy emphasizes a practicality and dedication to quality that enables a simple, good life, and we were immediately struck by the synergy with airbnb in its values of hosting,’ said MUJI’s president of the united states and canada, taku hareyama. ‘airbnb’s commitment to good hospitality and mission of providing authentic and positive experiences for its guests and hosts in the spaces that they live and stay is so core to our work, we were delighted to create a kit of essentials that would embody this philosophy of a commitment to reliable, quality basics.’

the creation of the kit wasn’t arbitrary — in fact, its components were selected based on insight from travelers themselves. in a survey, 1,000 US travelers revealed the items and rooms that make for an exceptional stay, as well as the items often overlooked by hosts. the survey found out that the top 5 essential items are: high-grade towels, hangers, coffee mugs, high-quality table settings, and high-caliber glassware. another interesting find is that travelers feel that the kitchen is often overlooked with 60% of the respondents saying that good kitchen equipment facilitates a positive review.

‘our focus when preparing for guests is centered around the actual experience of being there,’ said airbnb host sara combs of the joshua tree house. ‘this covers all of the senses as they relate to our locations in the desert. it’s so important to have the right amenities to become much more than just a place to sleep.’
