CHAOS//LOOP 2023 by Christof Babinsky

At the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023, Christof Babinsky together with ASB GlassFloor showcases his digital art collection CHAOS//LOOP 2023. At the prominent Time Space Existence exhibition, Babinsky’s NFT motifs are displayed on the LED panels he developed, the ASB Digital Wallpaper, expanding the design scope of architecture in a new context. Babinsky’s works in CHAOS//LOOP 2023 are based on the parameters of physics and utilize a system that only exists due to modern, digital camera sensors.

After the Venice Architecture Biennale one of Babinsky’s NFT’s will be given away to a lucky winner on Twitter; find here!

intersecting digital art with real-world architecture

Whether as an artist or entrepreneur, breaking expected boundaries has become a recurrent theme for the managing director of ASB GlassFloor Christof Babinsky’s career. The exhibition in Venice highlights NFTs and the documentation of their manufacturing processes: topics that have interested Babinsky since experimenting with photography at the interface of new technologies in university. With the blockchain and NFTs, Babinsky saw that the opportunities to inspire new architectural solutions had expanded once more.

consolidating the chaos

The collection of ten NFT’s entitled CHAOS//LOOP 2023 uses the medium of a ‘digital camera’ to create unpredictably chaotic creations by pointing a camera at its own screen. This produces a visual feedback loop fed by various images, such as pictures by other artists or the flame of a lighter. The results are hypnotic patterns generated autonomously. Babinsky, through meticulous analysis, selects from the consolidation of these artworks. Physical objects persist as moving images through the use of a digital camera employed on the basis of the feedback principle. The fascinating interplay between the digital and the analog world aims at discovering the unknown in art.

Innovative LED technology

The ‘canvas’ for the NFT artworks is an innovation by Babinsky himself: the ASB Digital Wallpaper, which makes it possible to project different images onto wall areas using LED technology. This creates high-quality architectural surfaces that permit the presentation of art and digital contents as an integral component of interior and exterior architecture.

‘What we are doing is basically simple: we are using LEDs in the way they are usually used for advertising purposes,’ explains Christof Babinsky, ‘Initially, we used this innovative idea in the sports area, where the floor of a hall can be converted from a handball to a volleyball court at the push of a button, for example. Then we realized that the scope for the use of this technology is considerably larger.’
