Temporary Pavilion by Syndicate Architects 

In a picturesque rural setting on Lake Zurich, Switzerland, Syndicate Architects propose a temporary pavilion clad in overlapping wooden panels. Drawing from the natural environment and vernacular architecture, the structure presents itself as a cluster of small geometric units that resembles a miniature village growing out of the lush landscape. The resulting structure complements the park it occupies while serving as a point of attraction in any season.

The pavilion by Syndicate Architects takes the key elements of the surrounding park and implements them in its scale as well as in its typology and materiality. In addition, the architects were inspired by the idea of being in a rural setting and also by local architecture. The main characteristics of interest were the proportionality to the human scale, the irregularity as a result of adaptation to external conditions rather than a clear geometric imperative, and the materiality, which often has accidental qualities that depend on the materials available and the processing traditions specific to the region. 

The resulting structure seeks to complement the site with an unconventional architectural solution. The pavilion is reminiscent of a miniature village that seems to grow out of the landscape, delineated and unified by the common facade fence. The exterior is entirely clad with intersecting wooden panels, creating an almost organic form reminiscent of a grass plant. Another important aspect of the project is sustainability. Extensive use of low-cost, easily replaceable wood elements, structural modularity, and limited area of standardized glazing with well-insulated walls provide energy efficiency, economical maintenance, and adaptability.
