sigurd Larsen designs a getaway for city dwellers

Berlin-based startup Raus unveils its latest cabin retreat in Biesenthal, Germany, designed by architect Sigurd Larsen. Founded in 2021 by school friends Christopher Eilers, Johann Ahlers and Julian Trautwein, the company’s mission is to provide city dwellers with short stays in spectacular landscapes that aren’t too remote to reach.

‘We live in a world where we are always on and always available. Sometimes you just need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city,’ says Raus Co-Founder and Managing Director Julian Trautwein. ‘With Raus, we create contemporary retreats in nature, without to-do lists and without having to worry about missing anything. We make spontaneous breaks from everyday life easy and uncomplicated to book – whenever you need them.’

The new cabin is sited on the grounds of Wehrmuehle, a historic estate and cultural venue one hour north of Berlin. Sigurd Larsen’s design maximizes the limited 18 sqm space with high ceilings, generous windows and skylights as well as large sliding glass doors, which blend the line between inside and out while elegantly framing the surroundings.

The architect comments, ‘Working with only a few cubic meters is in some ways always a challenge for architects. But at the same time, I found it to be a source of inspiration because there is such a clear framework set for what is possible. My hope is that each guest will be able to make this place their own and feel at home here, even if for a limited time.’

In addition to maximizing the small area, Larsen also wanted to create a cabin that makes nature the protagonist. The Danish architect therefore selected blackened timber for the exterior cladding and interior finish. The dark hue avoids reflections in the windows as much as possible and does not unnecessarily distract the viewer’s eye.

As for the program, the cabin is equipped with a modest kitchen, living and dining space, a queen-size bed, an additional bunk bed, and two outdoor terraces. There’s also on-site water and electricity and a food and drink package available upon request. The cabin can accommodate up to three adults or two adults with up to two small children.

‘With the addition of an extra sleeping space, we aim to make the Raus experience even more versatile for multiple people to experience at the same time. The new cabin model offers the perfect getaway for a small family or good friends,’ adds Ahlers.

The new Raus cabin will stay at Wehrmuehle for six months until October 2022.
