an extensive remodel of a 1950s home in texas

nestled among titanic oak and pecan trees in abilene, texas, ‘eagle house’ maintains its original mid-century exterior envelope. erling berg revitalized the interior of the old structure (dates back to 1956) to better suit a contemporary lifestyle.

the design employs a spacious layout, generating a well-lit living environment where intimacy is still maintained.

round openings add a cozy yet delicate touch to the eagle house

erling berg sought to generate an intimate family house, where its inhabitants can interact and spent time together. a round aperture punctured the wall, offers visual connection, and adds a playful touch to the interior. a wooden house-shaped structure is recessed to the wall, creating a cozy nest that invites the members to rest. at the same time, the circular opening above provides views opening towards the greenery surroundings.

throughout the day, natural light flows through the large window openings and skylights creating a never-ending shadow play, connecting the tree-giants outside with the warm tones of oak combined with large, reflecting, white surfaces inside. as a contrast, the exterior brick walls of the house were stuccoed and painted black, making the house discreetly delicate as it is swallowed by the crowns of the titans.eagle house in texas revives its interior, maintaining the original mid-century envelope
