alternative histories: iconic architecture reimagined in different styles using AI

fictional hybrid structures

A team of property experts at GetAgent, a UK-based real estate group, has recently unveiled a series which reimagined some of the world’s most iconic buildings in a range of different architecture styles. The series, which features fifteen visualizations created using the AI tool Midjourney, offers a unique glimpse into what these fictional structures might look like if they had been built in a different era or designed by a different architect.

Among the buildings that have been given a new lease on life are the Sydney Opera House, which has been redesigned in Tudor style, and the Parthenon, which has been given a Bauhaus-inspired makeover. La Sagrada Familia, one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona, has also been reimagined in a contemporary style, while the Taj Mahal has been given a Gothic twist.

getagent experiments with ai

The use of Midjourney, an AI tool that is capable of generating images based on a set of design parameters, has enabled GetAgent to create these hybrid works of reimagined iconic architecture. The team challenges the conventional ways in which we think about architecture and to explores the possibilities that emerge when different styles and design approaches are combined. By reimagining these iconic buildings in new ways, the team hopes to inspire a broader conversation about the role of architecture in shaping our built environment and to encourage a more imaginative and experimental approach to design. The result is a series of images that are thought-provoking and uncanny, offering a glimpse into what could have been.

a new design tool

While some may argue that such AI-generated visualizations of iconic architecture reimagined are purely speculative and have no real-world application, the project by GetAgent is a demonstration of the potential of assisted design to push the boundaries of what is possible in architecture — especially as tools like Midjourney become increasingly sophisticated, and ultimately more photorealistic. At the least, this method offers architects and designers a new tool to enable iterative explorations of design concepts.
