‘shadowing’s’ contemporary design mimics korean architecture

‘Shadowing 1’ landscape lighting made out of stainless steel is designed to emit low illumination and form intricate shadow patterns. Designers Hong Jong-hwi and Jeong Soo-hyun drew reference from traditional Korean architecture and customary craftsmanship to produce a contemporary elaborate design. Imitating the shape of a traditional pillar, the polished steel framework supports 8 plates that, when lit, reflect the lamplight on the ground. The light reflections and subtle shadows generated by the steel lamppost were the main objectives behind the design process.

‘Shadowing 1’ lamppost beams light radiance setting up a calm and warm ambiance and displaying the beauty of shadow in the Korean landscape. Differentiating from busy and commercialized urban areas that are heavily lit throughout the day, this design aimed to evoke interplay between subtle shadows and light rays. The composition promotes finespun and indistinct lighting that blends with the natural Korean environment.
